History

DWARVES

DWARVES

He Who Cannot Be Named has been playing punk rock for almost 30 years, most of that time with the legendary Dwarves. An original member of this San Francisco based combo, he wrote or cowrote many of your favorite tunes from the early Sub Pop albums “Blood Guts and Pussy” and “Thank Heaven For Little Girls”. He was voted guitarist of the year by Flipside Magazine in 1991, but is mostly known for his unusual stage wear, or lack thereof. His trademark look can best be described as “naked and wearing a mask”. According to James Orme from Slug Magazine, He Who… is “maybe the most mysterious character in all of rock n roll”

DEATH HOAX

Perhaps his infamous “death hoax” has something to do with this air of mystery. Sputnik Music published an account of this macabre bit of rock history.
In 1993 the band (Dwarves) issued a press release stating their guitarist

“HeWhoCannotBeNamed had been stabbed to death in Philadelphia. Though this later turned out to be a hoax, the band even went as far as to attach a tribute to the “late” guitarist on their 1993 Sub Pop-released album “Sugarfix”.  Sub Pop did not respond well to the hoax and summarily dropped the band from its label.”

SOLO ALBUMS

SUNDAY SCHOOL MASSACRE

Finally, in the summer of 2010, He Who Cannot Be Named released his first solo album titled “Sunday School Massacre” to rave reviews. AMP called it one of the most important punk rock releases in recent memory, and went on to say that it is everything you would come to expect from the guy responsible for most of the nasty riffs that kicked your ass when you were back in high school”.

HUMANITERRORIST

Hewho’s second album, “Humaniterrorist” was released in October 2012. This collection of songs continued where the first album left off, with Hewho’s own style of short, fast and funny punk. A music video from one of the songs on this album, “Getting Pissed” was released around the same time

In August of 2013 He Who Cannot Be Named returned to the UK. This time he appeared twice at the “Rebellion Festival” in Blackpool. For this exclusive appearance he was reunited with UK drummer Spike Smith.

MY DEGENERATION

2016 saw the release of Hewho’s third album, “My Degeneration” on Extra Medium Fidelity Records. This record saw the addition of San Francisco musicians Keith Mueller (Bite) on lead guitar, Mark Adams (Black Furies ) on drums, and Mike Wampler on bass.

Chris Barrows

The collaboration between Hewho and Florida punk legend Chris Barrows (Pink Lincolns) started around this time as well. Barrows sings lead vocals on a few He Who Cannot Be Named tracks from this period and Hewho played Farfisa organ on Chris Barrow’s albums “Human Being” (2014) and “Fake” ( 2016).

In 2015 A split 7” with the songs “Be My Girl” and “Human Being” by Barrows and “Don’t Tie Me Down” and “Pica” by He Who Cannot Be Named was released on Extra Medium Fidelity Records.

A 7” with the songs “Lovedoll” and “Donna Tossico” came out around this time as well.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE BRUTAL

Hewho’s fourth album, “The Good, The Bad, and The Brutal” was released in the fall of 2018. Krazy Keith Mueller again appears on lead guitar with the addition of drummer Diablo and bassist Bobby Ramone. This album is a collection of songs, half with the word Good in the title and half with the word Bad. It also features guest vocal appearances by Spike Slawson (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes), Chris Barrows (Pink Lincolns) Sean Wheeler (Throw Rag) and Nick Oliveri (Dwarves, Mondo Generator, Queens of the Stone Age). Two songs in this collection were co-witten with bay area punk singer/songwriter Dustin Umberger (Grim Deeds) who also sang on the album.

SPAIN

A few months before the world as we knew it ended, Hewho and his band toured Spain in November 2019. An exclusive 7” release of 4 rare versions of his songs was put out by the Spanish label Ghost Highway Records. A live video was also made of the song Duct Tape Love.

LIVE SPLIT WITH PINK LINCOLNS

In 2019 a live album split with Florida Legends “The Pink Lincoln’s” featuring long time friend and collaborator Chris Barrows was released.

CRUEL TOYS A-Z

Hewho released a collection of Instrumental Music in October 2020. These short pieces were performed with Toy Instrument sounds. The album was released exclusively on Bandcamp

Revolts

Around this time Hewho dusted off his vintage Farfisa Organ and began to play with San Francisco Super-Punks “Re-Volts”. He appears on three 7″s released on Pirates Press, “Wages”(2018), “Equator” (2018), and “Leeches” (2019).

FIBULOUS FABBER AND FRIENDS

This curious album appeared under the  name of He Who Cannot Be Named in December 2021 with an exclusive release on the Pop Punk Bandcamp label, “Lap Top Records”. Indeed it is a collection of children’s songs Hewho claims to have penned along with his mother.  Hmmm….

DIRTY AIR

Ambient music? Could it get any weirder than that? Yes He Who Cannot Be Named has an ambient electronic album called Dirty Air. It was released on Bandcamp in 2021.

IMPOSTOR

In 2023 a fifth punk album was released with the same line-up Hewho has been playing with for the past 6 years. This one is titled “Impostor” and much like the last includes guest vocal performances. This time we hear from Milo Ackerman, Nick Oliveri, Chris Barrows, and Reese Chism. Backing vocals were provided by Mike Patton from”Vista Blue”. Other than a new batch of Hewho penned classics, this album also includes a song written by Saltpeter and collaborations with Blag and Dustin Umberger from “Grim Deeds”. The opening track, “Funny Farm” was featured on Little Steven’s Underground Garage as “Coolest Song in the World”.

Man of Mystery

Popular Rock Bands

Very little is known about Hewhocannotbenamed’s actual identity.  Some say he is a high ranking corrupt GOP politician, or an undercover agent for a foreign government. He has been banned from venues al over the world and Interpol reportedly has an ongoing warrant out for his immediate arrest on undisclosed charges. He rarely appears in public and very few have seen him without a mask. There have been numerous reports of Hewho impersonators spotted all over the world, especially when The Dwarves play live shows. It has even been suggested that He Who Cannot Be Named does not really and is in fact merely a rock legend. Perhaps Hewho himself is an imposter. We will probably never know for sure.
